Flow batteries are particularly suited for grid-level electricity storage because they can be scaled up easily. They produce energy by pumping liquid electrolytes through a cell, and increasing their capacity is simply a matter of increasing the size of the storage tanks for the electrolytes.
It also plays an important role in regulating energy supply and frequency, making it a key component of China’s sustainable energy future. Rongke Power, a pioneer in flow battery technology, previously developed the 100 MW/400 MWh Dalian system in 2022, the largest of its kind at the time.
Flow battery technology is modular and scalable, allowing systems to be made for a wide range of applications, from power ratings of watts to megawatts, and with energy durations of many hours or even days. The battery can be constructed of low cost and readily available materials, such as thermoplastics and carbon-based materials.
