As the integration of renewable energy sources into the grid intensifies, the efficiency of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs), particularly the energy efficiency of the ubiquitous lithium-ion batteries they employ, is becoming a pivotal factor for energy storage management.
The rise in renewable energy utilization is increasing demand for battery energy-storage technologies (BESTs). BESTs based on lithium-ion batteries are being developed and deployed. However, this technology alone does not meet all the requirements for grid-scale energy storage.
Therefore, even if lithium-ion battery has a high CE, it may not be energy efficient. Energy efficiency, on the other hand, directly evaluates the ratio between the energy used during charging and the energy released during discharging, and is affected by various factors.
Battery energy-storage systems typically include batteries, battery-management systems, power-conversion systems and energy-management systems 21 (Fig. 2b).
