Energy storage systems in Spain are a key element in the fight against climate change, as they help us to address the challenge of the energy transition. These systems make renewable energy production more flexible; and therefore help us to guarantee its integration into the Spanish electricity system.
Spain had more than 1,100 hours of zero- or negatively-priced electricity in 2024: more than 45 days. Despite this, battery energy storage systems (BESS) remain rare, with grid operator Red Eléctrica España (REE) recording just 3.36 GW of grid-connected energy storage, 3.3 GW of which was pumped hydro.
With the cooperation of local partners and power companies, the SR Spain team obtained the grid-connected permit with leading PV+ Energy Storage solutions, robust investment solutions, international credit qualifications, and stringent environmental standards.
Spain has launched an ambitious €700 million (around $796 million) program to increase its energy storage capacity. This plan will add 2.5 to 3.5 gigawatts (GW) of storage. It includes pumped hydro, thermal energy storage, and battery systems.
