Electricity prices in Guyana are the third highest in the Caribbean due in large part to the country''s reliance on expensive imported oil for electricity generation. At present the cost of fuel accounts for up to 60 percent of the total cost of electricity generation.
The Guyana Gas to Energy Project will result in a substantially overbuilt electrical system. A new natural gas plant would be capable of generating far more electricity than Guyana Power & Light (GPL) customers are likely to need over the coming decade.
To lower energy costs, Guyana can increase utility-scale renewable energy capacity, adopt energy-saving measures, and switch to fuel efficient cars and freight trucks. These measures can help reduce energy costs. Currently, Guyana does not yet have a deregulated system that would allow for a vertically integrated utilities structure.
As at 2018, the total installed capacity for Solar PV in Guyana is 4.63 MW with an estimated annual generation of 7.16 GWh. In Guyana, solar energy is used for several purposes, including drying agricultural produce, irrigation, ICT, and to improve electricity access in rural areas.
