The previous regulation of the allocation of grid connection and feed-in permits in Spain has proven to be deficient in many respects. Essentially, economically and technically sound projects have repeatedly failed due to a lack of grids connection and feed-in permits, whereas unfeasible projects and/or speculators have occupied free capacities.
European regulations: New Spanish grid code Regulation EU 2016/631 (European, 2016a) is an official European document establishing a grid code that defines the requirements for grid connection of electricity generation facilities, mainly synchronous power-generating modules, power park modules and offshore power park modules.
Additionally, novel PV inverter control techniques ensure stable operation during unbalanced grid conditions using 4-leg NPC inverters, instantaneous active/reactive control, and hardware-based solutions. Table 16 provides a comparative analysis of these control strategies.
Within this framework, given the great importance of photovoltaic solar energy as a clean electricity generation technology that is experiencing an unstoppable increase, the present paper evaluates the compliance of a real solar photovoltaic power plant with a number of technical requirements established in the new Spanish grid code.
