Aside from the operating voltage range, another main parameter is the start-up voltage. It is the lowest acceptable voltage that is needed for the inverter to kick on. Each inverter has a minimum input voltage value that cannot trigger the inverter to operate if the PV voltage is lower than what is listed in the specification sheet.
As PV solar installations continue to grow rapidly over the last decade, the need for solar inverters with high efficiency, improved power density and higher power handling capabilities continue to increase. Today this is state of the art that these systems have a power conversion system (PCS) for battery storage integrated.
Almost any solar systems of any scale include an inverter of some type to allow the power to be used on site for AC-powered appliances or on the grid. Different types of inverters are shown in Figure 11.1 as examples. The available inverter models are now very efficient (over 95% power conversion efficiency), reliable, and economical.
In addition, the datasheet specifies the maximum voltage value of the inverter. Both the maximum voltage value and operating voltage range of an inverter are two main parameters that should be taken into account when stringing the inverter and PV array.
