Having hosted the 2015 Expo with the theme “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”, Milan demonstrated its commitment to sustainability and innovation. A landmark project has emerged: the inauguration of Italy’s largest photovoltaic (PV) plant at the Fiera Milano in Rho in May 2024.
Milan Fairgrounds has installed the biggest photovoltaic system in Italy, generating 22 GWh for on-site use & feeding excess energy into the Italian grid.
This report received valuable contributions from several stakeholders and experts of Italian photovoltaic (hereafter, PV) market: entrepreneurs, manufacturers of PV modules and other components, installers, Architecture School University IUAV of Venice, Nomisma Energia, and others. They all provided data and views included in this report.
The average installed size for new systems reached 23.8 kW. Most PV systems (98 %) are connected to the low-voltage grid, with 55 % located in northern Italy. Competitiveness and Costs: Average module prices declined to 0.28 €/W. Turnkey system costs ranged between 1.2 and 1.6 €/W for residential projects and 0.66–0.9 €/W for utility-scale plants.
