So far, however, the development of solar energy in the country has been rather limited. According to Latvia’s grid-operator Sadales tīkls AS, which is a subsidiary of Latvenergo, there was just1.3 MW of renewable energy power installed under net metering at the end of 2016.
Latvia has underground gas storage facilities at the Inčukalns UGS, with a capacity of 4.47 billion m 3. Natural gas companies include Latvijas Gāze. Renewable energy includes wind, solar, biomass and geothermal energy sources. Almost half of the electricity used in the country is provided by renewable energy sources.
The most recent update regarding BESS installations is that in Tume and Rēzekne, Latvia’s transmission system operator “Augstsprieguma tīkli” (AST) in June 2025 installed battery energy storage systems with a combined capacity of 80 MW and 160 MWh, which will undergo testing until October 2025.
Due to this, the government implemented a policy that focuses on the gradual growth of energy efficiency along with emphasis on the use of renewable energy resources. Latvia’s current government strategy outlines a path of energy transition from a heavy reliance on fossil fuel energy sources to an independent energy supply.
