One of the disadvantages of this type of battery is that it has a lower energy density compared to the Li-ion battery and it is not suitable for portable energy storage device applications. Flow batteries have numerous benefits that have made them a potential option for large-scale energy storage. They are well-suited for applications requiring long-duration storage due to their scalability, high energy density and long cycle life.
Flow batteries, while offering advantages in terms of decoupled power and energy capacity, suffer from lower energy density due to limitations in the solubility of active materials and electrode capacity. The broad voltage windows of non-aqueous electrolytes in flow batteries can also impact their energy density.
In summary, redox flow batteries are desirable for large-scale energy storage. To ensure their reliable performance and widespread adoption, several factors, such as cost reduction, capacity decay mitigation, and energy and power density improvements, need to be addressed.
