In this Review, we describe BESTs being developed for grid-scale energy storage, including high-energy, aqueous, redox flow, high-temperature and gas batteries. Battery technologies support various power system services, including providing grid support services and preventing curtailment.
The rise in renewable energy utilization is increasing demand for battery energy-storage technologies (BESTs). BESTs based on lithium-ion batteries are being developed and deployed. However, this technology alone does not meet all the requirements for grid-scale energy storage.
Integrated battery energy storage system equipment is a complete package that has AC output for connection to the electrical installation. On 3 October 2025, Standards Australia released a new technical specification for batteries: SA TS 5398:2025, Electrical Energy Storage Equipment – Safety Requirements.
Major energy-storage services for electricity generation include renewables integration 26, black start, peak shaving, long-duration energy storage and seasonal energy storage (Figs. 1b and 3). In renewables integration, BESTs are used to store renewable energy 26.
