Battery Storage is typically a better choice for long-term energy storage, such as for renewable energy systems (solar or wind) or home energy storage.
Flywheel energy storage systems offer a unique and efficient alternative to traditional battery systems, with advantages in speed, lifespan, and environmental impact. While battery storage remains the dominant choice for long-term energy storage, flywheel systems are well-suited for applications requiring rapid energy release and frequent cycling.
This project explored flywheel energy storage R&D to reach commercial viability for utility scale energy storage. This required advancing the design, manufacturing capability, system cost, storage capacity, efficiency, reliability, safety, and system level operation of flywheel energy storage technology.
However, the high cost of purchase and maintenance of solar batteries has been a major hindrance. Flywheel energy storage systems are suitable and economical when frequent charge and discharge cycles are required. Furthermore, flywheel batteries have high power density and a low environmental footprint.
