One of the largest battery storage projects in South America is being built in the Chilean Atacama desert. It complements the existing 220 MW PV power plant Diego de Almagro Sur operated by the electric utility company Colbún S.A. Since 2022, the plant has been supplying the region with solar power using SMA technology.
“Solar power is stored in a grid-supportive manner and is used 24/7 to stabilize the grid. This underscores SMA''s commitment to the expansion of a sustainable and secure energy supply in Latin America.” The large-scale storage system is being built in the commune of Diego de Almagro in the Atacama region.
The battery storage system will not only store solar power but can be activated as needed and will also contribute to Chile''s security of supply through instantaneous reserve and black-start capability.
At the core of the project are 67 SMA battery systems with powerful SMA battery inverters combined with batteries by eStorage, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar Inc. SMA is also providing a plant control system specifically developed for large-scale storage projects.
