Base stations that form the telephone network for mobile phones are fitted with microwave antennas and are usually mounted on high structures such as a pole or a tower. They have low powered radio transmitters, which relay communication between the mobile phones and the switch.
Mobile base stations are normally hooked up to the power grid, using that electricity to amplify the cell signal to the broader area. During a power outage, an on-site battery kicks in to keep the tower running. If the outage persists, a crew could arrive with a diesel generator to keep powering the tower.
The typical distance between a base station and a mobile device can be five to 40 miles depending on the topography of the physical terrain. In urban areas where there are many high-rise buildings and tunnels, the range can be even less.
