The Energy sector in Tanzania began decades ago, laying a foundation for what has now a become a robust and transformative sector.
TANESCO owns most of Tanzania’s mainland’s electricity generation, facilities. Among others, TANESCO is responsible for developing renewable energy projects in the power generation mix.
Three large generation projects are currently under construction, with total installed capacity of 2,326.7 MW: Julius Nyerere Hydro Power Project (2,115 MW), Kinyerezi I Extension Gas Power Project (185 MW), and Rusumo Hydro Power Project (26.7 MW for Tanzania out of total 80 MW installed capacity).
The overall access to electricity for Tanzania’s Mainland is 78.4%, of which 99.6% is for urban areas and 69.8% for rural areas. Tanzania has enormous and diverse renewable energy, including hydro, geothermal, solar, wind, and biomass.
